El Basurero de la Zona 3 en Guatemala

Imagina cargar a tu bebé de un año en su espalda y al mismo tiempo buscar “tesoros” en la basura para poder darle de comer a su familia ó productos que pueda vender para reciclar o darle pegamento a ese bebé para que pare de llorar del hambre. El olor de la basura putrefacta, el calor del sol tan fuerte y todos los peligros a los que están expuestos, simplemente es inhumano. Las personas comenzaron a trabajar en este sector por falta de oportunidades de trabajo, bajo nivel académico o técnico en las áreas de donde provienen (pequeños poblados alrededor del país).

Esta es la realidad que vive a diario todas las personas que trabajan en el Basurero (Relleno Sanitario). Ellos se llaman a si mismos “Guajeros”. Esta gente se han convertido en parte de estos basureros en la Zona 3, de Guatemala por muchas generaciones. El bajo ingreso económico de estas familias provoca en los niños mala alimentación y falta de oportunidades educativas llevándolos a vivir en un círculo vicioso, debido a que el desarrollo cerebral e intelectual de los niños se ve seriamente afectado. Estos niños muchas veces también viven dentro de un ambiente hostil, violento, marginal, donde el alcohol, las drogas, las pandillas (maras) y la delincuencia se ofrecen como únicas alternativas, principalmente se debe por la falta de valores dentro del hogar.

The Garbage Landfill of Zone 3 Guatemala

Imagine carrying your one year old child on your back for hours under the suns hot rays. Rummaging through tons of garbage in a garbage landfill looking for “treasures” to sell, just so you can feed your family. At the same time, imagine drugging that child on your back, with sniffing glue to quiet their hunger pains. Imagine renting your older kids for a few $/Quetzales a day to strangers for ungodly, illegal acts. The stench of garbage and hot sun rays emanate these landfills. This is the inhumane reality and workplace where people known as “Guajeros” work and live. These people began working here due to lack of education and work opportunities.

These Guajeros live this unimaginable and harsh reality daily. This is their home and they have become a part of the landfills in Zona 3, Guatemala. This is their only way of making a living and the only way of survival for many of them, generation after generation. Their poverty level and low economic income does not afford them enough money to provide appropriate nutrition or eduction for their children. Often times these children also live in hostile, violent, marginal environments where alcohol, drugs, and gangs are their only alternative to survival. Sadly this has become a vicious cycle repeating itself generation after generation.
