These people are characterized by a very low self-esteem: a condition which should be taken into consideration when seeking solutions to help them. Within the labour hierarchy of the dump the guajero is the last person on the scale. The intermediary guajero is the next up on the scale: his position requires many years on the dump - he works as a guajero, but also is able to have “employees”.

The intermediary derives his pay from the volume of objects “harvested”, which he then sells on to the middlemen or factories. Although he has better earnings than the common guajero, this is not reflected in his quality of life: he still spends his life in and around the dump. The highest-ranking intermediary will have no direct contact with the rubbish. He knows the market value of the objects found and will generally purchase these objects from the guajeros in accordance with a table of pre-established prices. The intermediaries sell these objects to representatives of the factories, traders in the retail markets, or directly to the public.
