The Dump

The mothers or fathers usually bring their children to work on the dump. In a few cases these children are brought by their friends or relatives. For the women who have children in the dump, their responsibility as a mother and housewife comes after their responsibility to work in the dump.
Studies carried out in the landfill show that the bonds within the family are not stable. In some cases, the father figure is valued as a symbol of security and respect, however in the vast majority of cases the father is viewed with fear due to the continual use of violence in the family and a host of other problems. It follows logically that parental separation is rife in the dump - there are rarely any marriages, normally only the brief uniting of individuals. The women are then left with the responsibility of bringing up the children on their own. It follows from this that many women guajeras have children from different fathers.
